Constitution of the Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents’ Association

The organisation shall be called: “Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents’ Association”


The aims of the Association shall be:-

to promote the interests of those residents of Shrewsbury town centre living within the river loop (an area otherwise known as ‘between the bridges’ and hereinafter called ‘the neighbourhood’;

  • to promote a balance between residential, business and visitor interests which maintain the essential character of Shrewsbury and enhances the quality of life of all who live and work there
  • to represent the interests of residents to local and national authorities and other organisations;
  • to encourage an increased number of residents into the town centre thus helping to ensure a vigorous community life;
  • to monitor and comment on planning and development issues such as the use of open spaces, traffic schemes, parking, policing and street cleansing.

 to negotiate cooperative activities with other voluntary and statutory bodies interested in the town at large, and in a manner which promotes the aims listed above


Membership shall be open to all persons over the age of 18 who are living in the neighbourhood within the river loop.

* Associate membership shall be open to existing members who move to live outside the loop of the river.  Such members retain the facility to attend any meetings or events but are not eligible to vote or hold office.

Honorary Officers

The Annual General Meeting shall elect such Officers as it may from time to time determine, but always including:

Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, & Treasurer.

The Officers shall hold office for three years but shall be eligible for re-­election.

* At the request of any officer or elected committee member, the officers of the Association, plus one additional nominated member of the Committee who has been a member for not less than one year, shall be convened as an Executive Committee to take any urgent decisions between meetings, such decisions to require ratification by the whole Committee at its next regular meeting.


 The individual members shall pay such Annual Subscriptions as the Committee shall from time to time recommend to and be approved by the A.G.M. On the recommendation of the Treasurer, the Committee shall have the authority to vary the starting and subsequent renewal date of any individual subscription.


One-third of the members shall form a quorum at meetings of the Committee and all sub-committees.


Minute books shall be kept by the Association, the Committee, and such sub-committees as the Committee shall from time to time determine.


 If the Committee by a simple majority decides at any time that it is necessary or advisable to dissolve the Association, it shall call a meeting of all its members and the residents of the neighbourhood over the age of 18, of which meeting not less than 21 days notice shall be posted in a conspicuous place or places in the neighbourhood and advertised in a newspaper circulating in the neighbourhood. If such a decision shall be confirmed by a simple majority of those present at such meeting, the Committee shall have the power to dispose of any assets held by or in the name of the Association. Any assets remaining after the satisfaction of any debts and liabilities shall be applied towards charitable purposes for the benefit of the residents of the neighbourhood as the Committee may decide.

Alterations to the Constitution

Any alterations to this Constitution shall require the approval of two-thirds of the members present and voting at a General Meeting, provided that the members have been given not less than 14 days’ notice in writing of such General Meeting and of the wording of the proposed alteration.
